While help is on the way
- Not breathing / no pulse: start CPR — push hard and fast in the center of the chest, ~110 compressions a minute; don’t stop until help arrives.
- Severe bleeding: press firmly on the wound with cloth; don’t remove soaked layers, add more on top.
- Choking: 5 hard back blows between the shoulder blades, then 5 abdominal thrusts; repeat.
- Suspected stroke: note the time symptoms started — treatment is time-critical.
- Unconscious but breathing: roll them onto their side, tilt head back to keep the airway open.
